How many quotes should I get?
That depends on the size of your move and when and where you are moving.
Movers are busiest during the summer months and at month ends. If you can avoid these times, you can be confident of getting competitive prices with only 3 quotes. If you are moving during peak moving season, you might need to get more quotes in order find a mover that has men and equipment available.
If you are moving long distance (over 100 miles), it can be advantageous to get 5 or 6 quotes, especially if you have a smaller move. Ideally you would like to find a mover that has a van already scheduled for your destination. Moving vans typically carry several households on long distance moves, and moving companies are anxious to fill their trucks or find “backhaul” to give them some revenue coming home. Finding the right company could save you hundreds of dollars without compromising service.
How do I choose a mover?
If you have used a mover before or if you have friends that recommend a mover, this is by far your best choice. Don’t get discouraged if their price is a little higher. You may well be saving money and headaches once the move is complete. Recommendations on consumer sites can also be helpful, but bear in mind that there are often bogus testimonials, both positive and negative, that may have been posted by the owners or their competitors.
Without trusted recommendations, you will need to look for credible affiliations like the AMSA or the BBB. Also membership in a national van line usually indicates an established moving company. Smaller local companies are often a good choice for local moves however make sure these companies have a local business address. Be cautious with movers that operate from a residence or have only a cell phone number.
Do I need to have a company representative come to my house?
If you have all the time in the world and enjoy having coffee with salespeople, invite a salesperson from all the moving companies to visit your home. If you are pressed for time, short list the movers based on your CLICKandMOVE price and your research on the web and then meet with representatives from the only these companies. It is a good idea to at least meet with your chosen mover so they can review your inventory, discuss the details of your move and assess any difficulties that your move may present.
