Planning a move can seem overwhelming.  The best way to overcome this is by taking it incrementally.  If you are planning to move next year, start early.  This will help you prepare ahead of time.  Here are some great tips to help you plan your upcoming move.

Plan.  Planning is an important element to any move.  It helps prepare yourself for the tasks at hand.  Getting an early start helps tremendously.  This allows you time to itemize all of what you have to accomplish and gives you time to do research and price comparisons.  It is never to early to plan.  In fact, if you plan to move next spring or summer, start now.  The peak moving season is late spring and early summer, so getting a head start will help you secure some dates and the mover you want.

Downsize.  Starting early affords you the opportunity to get rid of the things you do not want or need.  Consider selling your things online or donating them.  An early start will allow you the time you need to organize yourself and evaluate whether you want to pay to move those items.

Research.  An early start allows you to do the research you need to do.  This gives you time to research the area you are moving to and the help you need.  Contact the professionals you will need and let them know your plans.  Beginning this task early allows you the chance to meet with people with less stress and gives you the time to make your decision.  It also gives you an opportunity to compare prices and shop around.  Do not forget to do your due diligence.  If it sounds to good to be true, it may be too good to be true.

Special Handling.  If you have any special items that require special handling, starting early is very important.  It gives you the time to research your options.  If you are planning on moving a piano, horse, cars, art or collectibles, you will need to research your options in order to make the best choice for yourself.  Don’t forget to mention any of these special items to your mover.  If they are not able to transport it, they may be able to put you in contact with someone who can.

It may seem crazy to start thinking about moving while you are celebrating the holidays.  However, this is one case where if you start early it will pay off.  Keeping the move in your mind as you put your holiday decorations away, start your spring cleaning early and make phone calls will help to alleviate some of that work as you get closer.
